Peep out the Audio of the Jazzy Jeff Interview Here
S-1: Yeah, yeah, yeah was goin on my peoples you now what I’m sayin, this is S-1 “7th & Collins Live” and today I don’t even need to introduce my boy because I know everybody knows who he is he’s the magnificent DJ Jazzy Jeff…How you feelin today dawg?
Jazzy Jeff: Good, good man how you?
S-1: Alright man, how’s my lovely city of Miami treatin you?
Jazzy Jeff: Ah man you don’t get any better then this I get up and open the window and I see the beach and blue wa…you know where I’m from the water kinda brown….the blue and the green water it’s dope!!
S-1: Well we wanna extend a big arm welcome makin sure that you alright…But lets kick it a minute…The first thing I wanted to ask is you got a couple of albums recently under your belt “Hip Hop 2” and the “The Magnificent”…I know a lot ya’ll niggas is flavorin with that…That’s a little project you got off in Philly with your “Touch of Jazz” production studio…Talk to us about that…That’s a nice way of givin back to the community you opened the doors for the artist up there in Philly to get busy….What’s up with that project man?
Jazzy Jeff: Well more the anything I think it was just me looking at the struggles and the trials and tribulations that I had comin up in da game…Just havin to get 9 to 5 jobs an lay away drum machines and try to make beats and do stuff..So when success touched me the first thing I wanted to do was have a place that you can find people that were like me back then and to give them a place where you can go and just develop…Its like they were sayin the greatest golf player in the world might live in da hood but if there are no golf courses in da hood the you would never know…So its kinda like… to have the studio… to just….you know when you see talented people… to try to give them the chance to see if this is that rare flower that can blossom into something incredible…I not gonna sit and say that was my intention…it was kinda my intention without me even knowin it…I kinda had some success so I wanted to buy a bunch of equipment and wanted some people to play with…you know what I mean? So the older that you get you kinda of understand that that’s God’s way of telling you that this is what you were supposed to do…you was just too young to understand that that’s what it was…but just to kinda…have a situation where you can call on people and just have them come in and see what happens and just build from there…
S-1: No doubt, not doubt I feel that man you know what I’m sayin…you helping a lot of good talents artists in Philly get their shine on…Thats definitely respectable…Big shout for that!
Jazzy Jeff: I appreciate that
S-1: We know that you just came back from tour, you were with Wil Smith in South Africa if I’m correct...How did it feel going out to South Africa and tourin? What was the love like?
Jazzy Jeff: Ah man, well you know it was crazy…this was like my third time going out to South Africa…The dope thing about hip hop is hip-hop has become so worldwide that I’m playin in places that I would never in my life thought that I would be at…Like I would never have thought that I’d be playin for thousands of people in South Africa, in Brazil, in Russia, in China and Hong Kong…This hip hop thing is worldwide…To be able to play a Biggie record in South Africa and their able to vibe to it just like they do in Russia, just like they do in South America, in Korea…You know sometimes it trips you out for you to realize just how big it has gotten…It was cool to go down there me and Wil you know we started doing some shows, he’s getting ready to drop another record. This is almost our 20th anniversary so we about to take it back to 2 turntables and the microphone that what a lot of people least expect, for the anniversary of Jazz and Fresh Prince is leave the dances and all of the glitz and lets just go to you rockin beats and I get on the mic and I do my thang and we just make it happen…
S-1: Definitely feelin that…Can’t wait for that to come out…Watch out for that…You getting it first here on Legacy Live…Another real quick question before we wrap up…Any projects that you have that maybe coming out of “Touch of Jazz” that you might wanna give a spotlight to?
Jazzy Jeff: I got an artist V, he’s a soul singer, his record will be droppin on on BBE and Touch of Jazz collaboration probably June or July, look out for that its gonna definitely be hot that on some baby making stuff…I tryin to take some time off and go into the studio to do “The Return of the Magnificent” I just mappin that and out how I want that to go…Right now life is good, I’m down here in Miami…I’m DJ’n playin for people that’s got love for the music…This is pretty much what I’ve been wanting to do…Lovin life…
S-1:Alright last question and we’re gonna go ahead and wrap up. You were talkin about the next beat… the next hot track could possibly be comin out of somebody’s bedroom because of the technology we have available to us. New and up and coming producers, that are rollin up…any words of advice, along those lines with technology and how to make it happen.
Jazzy Jeff: Well I think the beauty of technology now is kinda like you can go out and buy a piece of equipment and everybody pretty much has the same thing, which makes the playin field equal. You don’t have the excuse that “I can’t get into this really hot studio”, or, “I got this really hot engineer?”, because the same equipment that these cats using is the same as those big million dollar studios, you can have in your bedroom for five hundred dollars, so it’s kinda like, what I like is that it evens out the playin field. That makes it just about the music, it ain’t about the mix, it ain’t about the room, it ain’t about none of that…it’s just about the music. You gonna have that young cat comin out of the bedroom and he’s just gonna bring heat. The biggest piece of advice is that just let yourself go, just be creative, don’t try to be like nobody else, don’t nobody like coming in second. So don’t try to be like somebody that is already out there, do you and see what happens. There’s a lot of cats out here now that look at the music industry like it’s the new drug game and it’s all about money. Let me tell you something, everybody I know that chases money does not catch it. You wanna get money, let me tell you something, do you, and the money will come, coz if you chase money you ain’t gonna catch it.
S1: Ay yo man words of advice, we’re gonna go off on that note, you know what I’m sayin, DJ Jazzy Jeff and S1: Legacy magazine, 7th and Collins live we’re doin it real big, you know the routine, you know how we get down baby!!!! ONE!
