9th Wonder The Interview

Every now and then hip hop churns out prolific producers and 9th Wonder in the short time that he has been around has garnered respect from the best in the game. His name will appear in the history books as the man that kept hip hop alive. With hits for the likes of Jay-Z and The Boot Camp clik not to mention his North Carolina native Little Brother 9th has etched himself as one of the best…S1 recently caught up to 9th in the studio while touching up his latest masterpiece “The Wonder Years”, and this is what he had to say:
S1: Yeah, yeah, yeah what’s going on my peoples!!! You know who this is, this is the mother fucking man S1…Legacy Magazine, Legacy Radio, Legacymag.net, man listen check it today honestly really honestly I feel wonderful and that could be that I got my boy 9th Wonder right here with me…How you doin big dawg?
9th: I’m good man in here working on Wonder Years as we speak man…
S1: Aiight that’s definitely wassup…Since we talking to you right now how is that coming and what can we expect?
9th: Well the Wonder Years is like a cookout album…Something you put on at a cookout and let it run all the way through you know what I’m saying…As you arrive to the cookout you leave the cookout that’s what it’s for…There’s not that music out there made anymore so that’s thought to do…
S1: That’s wassup definitely feeling that…In all honest bro I don’t even know where to begin but definitely your music is legendary, your one of those few individuals and I do say few, DJ Premier is definitely one, that can keep one foot in the mainstream and the underground and be respected by all…Talk to us, what put you into the game you know North Carolina native, Justus League, Little Brother…But go ahead just put us on, what put you into the game?

9th: Man you know just studying the greats really…Hold on man…My bad…Studying the greats and trying to make that classic record and using that formula in my music…So that was my goal when I first got to the game…
S1: Alright…Who were some of the producers and DJ’s that you were listening to when you got in the game? Who were some of the few to take you under their wing? You know what I’m saying…
9th: Pete Rock was one…He was the one that really got me in him and Marly Marl and Young Guru from Roca Fella were that catz that took me in and tried to show me things…Also Jazzy Jeff as well…You know I always believe in my elders man…I believe in catz that are trying to make the same music as I do…
S1: Aiight that’s definitely wassup…Obviously it shows in your music and I don’t think any of your fans would disagree…But real quick, take us through you know Little Brother, North Carolina that whole little era the Jutus League…Just kind of revisit that time for us homeboy…

9th: Well you know a lot of times North Carolina was like a follow me state where you never know you never know what the exact sound is here…So we decided to go a certain way…A lot of people say we sounded underground and gave it these labels but all I wanted to do was make good music…
S1: My understanding is that you’re a professor at North Carolina Central State where you teach a hip hop history class with Chris Martin from Kid-n-Play…Put us on to that man…What the deal with that?
9th: It’s a situation where I wanted to keep the history of hip hop from 73’ to 97’, for the kids that didn’t grow up in that time I really wanted to do that…We work so well doing that telling all the classic stories…That’s what it is for us I come thru with the history that you haven’t heard and then Play comes along and tells classic stories…It works like that.
S1: That’s classic…I would love to be taking that class right now…But do you find people taking the class that might not know about you or about hip hop in general?
9th: Yeah…You know I get a lot of students that tell me when they see uncles and aunts that are older that they can keep up with them about back in the day…
S1: Let’s talk about the Wonder Years…What can we expect?

9th: Well the Wonder Years man it’s Mos, Little Brother, Kweli, Cesar Moses, Camp Lo, Mr. Cheeks…Man everybody is on there! Just artists that I’ve always wanted to work and ones that wanted to work with me…So that’s what the Wonder Years line up looks like so far…
S1: Aiight that’s definitely wassup…So another thing I wanted to touch on was the whole Boot Camp projects that you did a couple of summers ago, what was that whole experience like working with those catz?
9th: Man working for those catz was a dream for me…And that’s the thing about hip hop man cause these catz was architects and catz don’t understand and give of brush these catz to the side cause they not hot right now but hip hop will never last from a foundation standpoint if we do celebrate and respect the catz that paved the way…Like they do for rock, like they do for basketball…I think the hip hop honors is changing that…But man I lived for Buck, I lived for Pete Rock, I lived for De La…That’s just a dream and there is not enough of that going on…
S1: That’s refreshing to hear that come from you because right now your what’s hot and that’s humble man a very good look…Any words of advice for aspiring producers out there?
9th: Aw man just keep doing it…Somebody is gonna think it’s hot man if you got good music…Just keep at it and study the game…Stick to your guns don’t let anybody change what you wanna do and the music that you wanna make…
S1: Once again this S1 bringing you nothing but the legends I got my boy 9th Wonder any last words?
9th: Shout out to all the hip hoppers around the world…”Hip Hop Is Real!”…
