Chapter 13: Nevermores Asylum

It’s been a long time since I was able to listen to a hip-hop album from beginning to end and come away feeling like completely satisfied with all the material. That exactly how I felt about Chapter 13’s “Nevermores Asylum.” Hailing from Chicago by way of Mississippi Chapter 13 took it back to the basics as far as sampling is concerned and produced a blueprint on sampling and arrangement in this new era of production. It just seems like Young V and Rashid Hadee really took their time with this album and didn’t leave to many holes to criticize from the lyrics right on down to the drum kicks.

My favorite track is "The Rebirth" which is full of catchy metaphors that take you on a journey of their struggle to get their music out. “We was taught to break bread, love and protect, spits rhymes and make beats to fracture ya neck.” I really got to give it up to Jerry Juliano the CEO of Neblina Records for recognizing the talent of these catz and putting them out because whoever had a label and tossed Chapter 13’s demo away was just plain stupid. Another track that I liked was “Vacation” which has a little bassa nova strings thing going on which I thought was hot. I mean it’s just track after track of dope shit like “Makin it Right” which uses a nasty little jazz guitar riff that takes you back to the golden era of hip-hop, “Jackson” which is an ode to life in Mississippi is another burner. If you ever wanted to know what life is like in Jackson this joint represents life there to the fullest. “Seeing ghosts on the darkest roads, we the descendants of slaves and we outta control but rappers and critics think we ain’t got no skills cause we flashin false chrome and got gold in our grills.”

Overall Nevermores Asylum never loses steam throughout the whole album and I recommend anyone pick this up if you like real hip hop. I would put this right up there with “Southernplayalisticcadillacmusic” by Outkast. Chapter 13 has a very bright future and this will not be the last time you hear of these catz, truss me!! I gave it 5 blunts!!! Cannabis Cup!!!
