The CL Smooth Interview

S1 & CL Smooth

CL SMOOTH: AMERICAN ME

CL Smooth the rap God is still razor sharp and still droppin knowledge on brothers. With a new album set for a June release “American Me”, a rejuvenated CL Smooth is set to show these young catz how to put it down. S1 and the Legacy crew caught up with CL in South Beach and this is what the OG had to say:

S1: Yeah, yeah, yeah my niggas you know who this is...S1 Legacy Magazine, www.legacymag.net we in South Beach right now and I got my nigga CL Smooth coolin in the muthafuckin beach with me...What up nigga?

CL: Shout at me homie… I'm here… Straight outta New York!!!

S1: Aiight, aight...Makin it happen… Now listen man my niggas got an album thats gonna be dropping pretty soon at the end of June...He's down here to work with some producers...Put us on to that baby...Who you working with? Whats the date ? Whats the name?

CL: Well first of all my new project the name of it is American Me and right now my cameos are the producers I working with the likes of Mike Lowe, Arsonist of the Heatmakerz...Gettin ready to work with 9th Wonder down here its a beautiful thing...So right now I'm real focused and I'm real excited about what the anticipation...I'm expecting to drop it June so I'm very excited...

S1: Alright, alright...Thats definitely whats up, thats definitely whats up...Not to get off the beaten path but I just wanted to ask how is Miami treating you? How you feeling today? There's a lot of young ladies out here...Whats poppin dawg? Whats the feeling? What the vibe?

CL: Well I'm just soaking it up right now and really just tasting the vibe and going with the vibe and really lead that up into the studio and really make that a beautiful thing to marvel at and at the same time preserve my sexy...

S1: Aiight, aiight no doubt...So what sparked you to get back into the studio again dawg?

CL: Just sitting down with the anticipation of putting back my group...And then when the shit fell thru it just left a bad taste in my mouth, butat the same time it really sparked something in me...The odds makers is was like CL can’t really do it without Pete Rock and thats always been my determination to say I'm the writer I'm the originality of this whole shit and I wanted people to know that…But sometimes you got to stand up and be spoken for and thats what I try to do I try to put myself out there and really not play myself and really take it to the next level of sharpening my craft in the studio and once it takes fire and catches fire everything else will fall into place...But its no disrespect but I was just disappointed in the build up in the anticipation of the group and then when that folded through and takin my focus and knowing what to do with it I put it all into CL right now and I'm reaping the benefits of it right now...

S1: No doubt thats definitely real...Thats funny cause that made me think of “American Me” I like that name… I feel that name...Is there any type of message that you trying to get across is there anything that you got within the music itself?

CL: Definitely its about the upliftment of people who have been told that they can't do something and everytime they say you can't do something either you play at it or you fold to it...And I'm giving them a blueprint of how to come up out of that, of how to understand the politicalism and not everybody's on your side but if you have the focus and the determination and the spirit about yourself to get over then you gonna practice what you preach

S1: Aiight, aight…That’s real…That’s real baby…So from what I understand with the new album your gonna let the producers shine instead of getting a lot of artist come in and kinda like color coordinate your shit…Whats up with that yo? How you gonna get that off?

CL: What I’m doing is where the artists goes and does his own work…You can have another finger come in and paint your portrait, so therefore I’m just taking color coordinations from other people and I’m taking their colors and I’m painting my own picture…Like the producers…The producers are my highlight…The artists must stay the artists, a lot of times you have an artists who can only do half a song when they perform…So I’m bringing it back where the artist does his own work and I feel that’s important…

S1: Let me ask you a question bro...What do you think about the game as far as the last ten years man? Is it a better game?

CL: Its a better game because you 10,000 more outlets then ten years ago, ya dig...Rap has grown, I'm not saying that the music has grown I'm not sayin that...I'm sayin rap has grown and the music has to catch up to where's its grown by...Thats where the dilema is, its not per say rap is falling apart...Its not, you got rap on the muthafuckin city card commercial...American Express...How you telling me? Its more then chicken and beer...Its more then that, its everywhere...You got white people that dialog and everything they swagger, its a life style its not something you just become its a lifestyle...

S1: Ay yo before we bounce anything you wanna say? The platform is yours!!!

CL: I just want the people to know go out and get American Me it’s falling in June…The single American Me will be out in April we taking it all the way to June… Blackheart the movement we are here baby!!!

S1: Aiight baby…You know how it is you know we get down….S1, CL Smooth we muthafuckin out!!!
