The DJ Lazy K Interview

S1 & DJ Lazy K

DJ Lazy K: Ladies First

DJ Lazy K: Ladies First

Considered one of the top female DJ’s, DJ Lazy K for all you catz that don’t know, is the first DJ to put 50 Cent on a mixtape. But this is not the only thing she should be remembered for, Lazy K has been in the game since the early 90’s on the 1’s and 2’s rocking parties and putting out the hottest mixes in NYC. Originally a nursing student turned DJ, S1 caught up with the fly B-Girl and she breaks down the whole story for us:

S1: Yeah, yeah, yeah whats going on my peoples…You know who this is, its S1 the mutha fuckin man…Legacy Magazine, Legacy radio, www.legacymag.net and listen man check it bro you know we only fuck with the best…You know we only fuck with the legends and today I’m bringing you a certified legend I’m not even gonna front…For all you that don’t know I got my homegirl DJ Lazy K you know what I’m sayin!!! Wassup mama talk to me…You been putting a lot or work, there are a lot of things I wanna ask you but uhhh how you feeling today? whats poppin? whats good?

LK: Today I’m feeling good, I’m in the studio grindin right now…Feeling great and happy to have you here with me tonite…

S1: Alright! That’s definitely wassup…A real quick background cause I mean its deep I not gonna touch everything but you started DJin in 1991…You won a couple of DMC competitions that’s proves that your definitely no pushover and for our listen that may have picked up on the accent you were educated in Spain and in Switzerland…You did a lot of traveling before you got to the US, real quick touch on your childhood…I mean you traveled the world so you have a lot of experience…

LK: Yeah I’m latino…half Latino, half European and have French you know Belgium and French and definitely half of my life in Spain and the other here in New York City so for sure I’m very mixed and like you said I took to the mixin, turntables and that’s what I do best you know…Other then that hip hop is my life I just started doing Reggaeton also you know…Just music period that’s what I love doin, especially all the traveling you know I still go out of town and I still gotta do what do so its nothing….

S1: Absolutely that’s definitely wassup…Now let me ask you this…What do you have in your own personal music collection right? What does your selection consist of mama?

LK: Lazy K the best of G-Unit and right now Lazy K the old school joint I’m working on…I’m not gonna sound cocky but everything that’s in my car are either my mixes or other people that are on my mixes…

S1: Okay…hey listen that’s one way to guarantee that your gonna like what you hear right? If you make it you know you gonna like it…But listen I got a serious question for you, you ready?

LK: Real serious?

S1: Yeah real serious…

LK: Okay lets get serious then…

S1: You don’t seem Lazy…So whats up with the name?

LK: Well Lazy is the theme cause I’m a laidback person you know I stay back, I like to observe…Umm definitely I like to watch TV and things like that…I don’t like to clean but when it comes to music and rockin parties 100% come out and I just get all amped and make everybody get up and dance, for sure not Lazy I stay in the streets with the music so that takes a lot of work…So I’m Lazy at home but not Lazy when it comes to getting down on them turntables you know what I mean…

S1: Absolutely that’s why I had to ask that question…To me personally that was a deep question…A female DJ that’s worked with Puffy, Kane, 50 cent, Dip Set, Remy you know what I’m sayin Jadakiss…I’m like, homegirl ain’t Lazy I got to get to the bottom of this…But listen, what do you consider you biggest accomplishment?

LK: Actually the best that I have done is just maintain…I mean for someone who is supposed to be a nurse and end being a DJ and working with celebraties…But I think the biggest accomplishment for me would be being in Rolling Stone Magazine…I mean I was the first DJ to have 2 whole pages in the Rolling Stone Magazine that’s the one with Eminem on the cover and that’s because I was the one who put 50 Cent in the mix tape game first that’s why they gave me a shout out and interview in Rolling Stone Magazine that was a big accomplishment…I mean its a lot that I have accomplished like I said I was on my way to be a nurse, you know…I couldn’t get up that early in the morning, I was always out partying and rockin a crowd…I was like you know what this is paying the bills right now so why not…I put the nursing on hold and its been like what 10 years…

S1: On the reals this is what you call a real B-Girl!! So who is your favorite MC today?

LK: I would have to say Rakim still to this day, he would give me the chills…I also like Wu-Tang, but I have a lot of favorites….

S1: I know I put you on the spot with that one but you worked your way out of it…But I have another question, like we were talking before you work with a lot of big names and that shit is solid but do you or are you working with independents and unsigned artists?

LK: Always…If you look at all my mix tapes I always have the unsigned hype, I’m always looking forward to put that next person on…I definitely always looking to break records and that’s what I do that my job…
