DJ MUGGS: STEADY GRINDIN
We all been waiting for collabos between legendary group like Wu-Tang and Cypress Hill. Finally we are hit off with Grandmasters, produced entirely by O.G. producer Muggs. S1 recently caught with the super producer and talked about how that whole project went down:
S1: Yeah, yeah, yeah whats going on my niggas, You know who this is. This is S1...Legacy Magazine, Legacy Radio, Legacymag.net. And today man you know we only fuck with the legends dawg and I’m bringing one of them to you today live!!! I got none other then my nigga DJ Muggs you know what I’m saying the legendary Cypress Hill crew. Whats poppin my nigga?
Muggs: Whats good brother man, we out here in the west you know what I mean holding it down out in LA right now man.
S1: Alright, alright definitely feeling your shit you what I?m saying?Your work is obviously legendary you?ve been putting it in for a long time? But what have you been up to for the last few? Whats poppin in your world?
Muggs: Recently me and my mans DJ Kahlil started a label call Angeles Records. We just put out a Self Scientific album, we just put out DJ Muggs vs. GZA you know it’s like a meeting of Cypress and Wu-Tang. We just put that out right now , And we gearing up for the new Soul Assassin album coming up in August?
S1: Soul Assassins now that’s what I’m waiting for. Now who do you got on that album who produced alongside with you ? What are you hitting us off with ?
Muggs: The GZA record I produced the whole record myself man. The Self Scientific was produced by DJ Kahlil entirely. And uhm the Soul Assasin record we just got into it man. We just started getting in to it so I don’t know where its going. It’ll be ready August 29th I can guarantee that?
S1: Okay, okay definitely keep an eye out for that. Now as far as the GZA’s concerned you guys worked together on your last Soul Assassin but uhm explain to us how is that marriage? Obviously your comfortable working with him. Whats the deal with that?
Muggs: Yeah I’ve always been a big fan of GZA na what I mean like a big fan. I think he is one of the greatest poets of our time. So we’ve been in contact every time he’s in LA he reaches out to me, every time I get to New York I reach out. We kick it what not, You know the music he’s looking for just happens to be the music I do, you know what I mean? We?ve always had a good vibe in the studio you know for some reason. You don’t know who your gonna click with, you just click with a brother in the lab, So I got this label situation I told GZA you know lets do some stuff , so I hit him off with some beats he went off and wrote for a few months he came out to LA, And basically the recording process took 8 days all the work was done in pre production. Once we sat down though the beats was done and the rhymes was done it done in 8 days?
S1: Knock that shit right the fuck out, That’s what happens when you got chemistry you KNOW what I’m saying?
Muggs: Exactly!
S1: So whats the deal with your record label? You got a record label that you putting out there, you gonna bringing forth some of your own artists??Whats the deal? Break that shit down for us?Niggas wanna know?
Muggs: We bringing our own artists man?LA doesn?t have nothing except for Aftermath you know what I mean? And we don?t have labels like the old Def Jam, Tommy Boy, Loud ?Them labels that real hardcore underground labels that had good commercial success in facilitating a certain type of hip hop ?And we noticed that lax in the game and we noticed that a lot of these A&R catz they all want commercial fuckin bullshit!!! So we was like damn?okay? You see I?m a visionary, I see the future homie? And we trying to sell something to these labels and they don?t see the future they only see the today?Your little 2 hits ?It was a little frustrating? So we was like you know what? We need to put out our own record, do our own thing , because these people obviously don?t get it ?We get it, we know what it?s about ?We know how to do it, we know what this game needs and LA doesn?t have a movement like that?So we went and gathered up all the best talent in LA and were smashin on em!!!
