DRES: Where's The Black Sheep?

DRES of Black Sheep: Where's The Black Sheep?

With classic joints like The Choice is Yours and Strobelite Honey, Blacksheep has etched themselves in hip hop’s hall of fame as one of the most successful rap groups ever. But the past few years have been years of creative differences a thing that has always hampered great groups except this difference resulted in the departure of Mr. Long. Legacy recently had interviewed Mr. Long and we were also able to catch up with Dres so he could tell his side of the story and this is what he has to say:

S1: yeah yeah yeah what’s goin on my peoples. You know who this is this is S1 tha muthafuckin man S1, Legacy Magazine Legacy Radio Legacymag.net. Today I got my nigga Dres from Black Sheep, What’s poppin baby?

D: Yo on the reals it's all love on this side of the world, I am real happy to be droppin some new stuff after a long hiatus. Finally got my feet off the ground after putting together this album for the past year and a half. The album is called 8WM/ Novocain????? Its a digital release which means it is only available online, a physical release will probably be around January/ February in the stores, if everything goes as expected. But we up to a good start, we definitely off and poppin ya know. My lil man couldn't be up with me but he had aspirations to do something else and that’s what he did.

S1: Alright alright that’s definitely what’s up. It just so happens that we did get a chance to interview Mr. Long, he's puttin out his own project and what not. He did kinda give us his side of the story, would you like to throw anything out there, do you have anything to clear the air about. The platforms yours, Talk to us what’s up?

D: If anything, there's not much to clear the air about in my opinion ya know what I'm sayin. At the end of the day, I definitely had checked out the interview with Long, and he was speakin to the extent of his feelings, which I definitely respect, but at the same time he's sayin you know things are kinda wasn't exactly what the situation was. Dude had every opportunity, I called him for every studio session, meeting, I called him to be a part of this project in every, he felt it was more or less his way or he didn't want to have anything to do wit it. There was no room for compromise. How can one person make it so that the other one person isn't in the situation. There ain't no board, I didn't vote him off. I for damn sure didn't threaten or anything. It was a matter of ego and what dude perceived himself as. He definitely did shows with me with the production as it is, and he definitely took half the money. From the current album and up until his departure so I guess it was good enough to that. I think the pressure came down to his name wasn't on the credits to the capacity that he felt it should've been. And he couldn't deal with that. Hopefully at some point we will get past that, it's definitely not something I am pressed about coz at the end of the day character speaks for a lot in my world and dude's character definitely needs to be re-evaluated. Just sayin by himself, I have nuttin to do with that that is on him. In the meantime, I got a new Black Sheep project, that is def worth the listening. I feel great about it. It says so much of what cats aren't sayin out there these days. It's definitely suttin for the older crowd, I didn't put it out for a 14 yr old ear. Even though a 14 yr old ear can get so much for it. Coz I feel that a lot of these cats these days make music to children. I am a grown man out here, I am making music for a mature audience that has a sense of self. I am not saying you have to be young or old to say that you have a sense of self, it's just for you to kinda understand who you are, where you come from and where you tryin to go. That’s wasup wit me, you can hear a lil bit of the album at myspace.com/blacksheep. Def add on, make me a friend or what have you...Love is love. At the end of the day I appreciate everybody that ever played anything we ever made. Coz they didn't have to do that, I know what it's worth. We got records cats been playin for the last 15 years. Its kinda hard for me to get used to not sayin "WE" and start sayin "I". On the real I'll answer any version that do step out of this thing. Put it this way, I paid for every single aspect of this project, from the recording to the mixing to the mastering. I shot a video that dude chose not to be a part of. He stepped away in the ninth inning, its not like dude's voice is on the album. He stepped out in the ninth inning before anything really got poppin. The credit situation, he went and did an album and tried to hide the publishers we were using. He gave them an album , and they gave me the album. I didn't even know he was recording. The funny thing is that I had to break it down to him like, Yo my dude I just spent money for us, invested in our future, and you gonna spend money and invest in yours. That says a lot about who you are, and on the realz at the end of the day i feel very well I was a better friend than dude, than he'll probably ever have in his life. I am ready to go at it everyday HARD gettin this thing poppin. Where dude's work ethic is at, I can't really account for. I do know I don't control the mail, I can't stop him from sendin beats to everybody, or producing everybody, or havin a mix tape out, or DJ'n a club. Dude needs to check himself, someone needs to find him and put him on that the world don't revolve like that. He is a man and I don't really expect such a thing to take place. At the end of the day it is what it is, it's not worthy of an answer or a rebuttle Sincerely. On the real that’s my lil dude, I hope dude get his act together…

S1: And check it, first of all, we do appreciate you granting us the interview, number 2, I do wanna put it out there we asked you for an interview, and at the time we didn't tell you that we had already interviewed Mr Long. You agreed to the interview on our own, so this wasn't something that you comin on tryin to get interviewed...

D: Nah nah, hip hop is real for me, that’s my word. I would never have gone on somebody. I didn't really dig some of the statements or how they were phrased. I don't move like that, I would rather address it when the opportunity presents itself. I am not the type to be airing my laundry. I am really closed by it, it's not an issue in my life, coz it's not, Dude said what he said and I respect that. I don't respect it, but I will respect. It is what it is. That’s' my word for real for real. And I mean it sincerely, I looked at some of dudes project that the publicist gave to me. Honestly I love this cat with all my heart, but I don't think I made a mistake in the decision I made.

S1: We're definitely not gonna leave the interview with that, but as far as the situation that you guys have, I think you have aired out what you wanted to say. You made it very clear, we got both sides of the story. This interview is about you and your project. Let's go on with that portion of the interview now. What can we expect, obviously we know that Mr Long may not be on it as much, but what can we expect, what you got? Who's with you? Talk to us, niggas want to know…

D: On the real it been a lot of years in the makin. I reached out to a bunch of young catz out there and believed in them. Bean One, Vitamin D both of them out of Seattle. Young sister named Chocolate another sister by the name of Yummy Bingham that you might not heard of she‘s done a lot of stuff with De La…My man Show Biz did a joint for me and essentially I reached out to catz that’s masters of they craft…Not to say that my dude isn’t, my whole point was we wasn’t really situated for the whole project…Like that’s where my head was at reaching out to these young catz and I was real fortunate to find some real talent out there and lock down with them and that’s what hip hop is about to me like that’s how we kinda got on that catz believed in us and there ain’t nothing wrong with that in my opinion.

S1: If you had to choose one song that we needed to listen to which song would it b and why?

D: I would probably say Novocain Groove you know what I’m sayin this joints called Novocain Groove…And what I’m sayin with the concept of Novocain is like these days it’s like we breathe Novocain…It’s like we numb to a lot of things that’s going on around us if it’s not on our agenda we kind of closed mind to it like we don’t really care about each other at all…That’s what Novocain is that’s a real serious song…

S1: Okay let them know where they can check you out? Just put em on where they can check your material baby?

D: On the reals you can go to myspace.com/blacksheep and you can hear some joints on there…Straight up my dude love is love and I look forward to getting down there, check the myspace pages cause I’m gonna be on tour all over the country…

S1: Yo Dres you the man we definitely appreciate the love and the interview…
