Mellow Man Ace
The Interview

Mellow Man Ace: The Godfather

Mellow Man Ace has been a champion to all the latinos in the game flipping it in Spanglish. With his hit song “Mentirosa” Mellow Man Ace became the Godfather of Latin Rap and paved the way for reggaeton. The last few years Mellow has dedicated to putting out music by The Reyes Brothers which consists himself and his brother Sen Dog from Cypress Hill. S1 recently got a chance to talk to the Godfather of Latin Rap and this is what he had to say:

S1: Yeah, yeah, yeah…What’s going on my peoples!!! You know who this is…This is S1 the mutha fucking man Legacy Radio, Legacy Magazine, Legacymag.net…Listen man today is one of the those days where a lot of mutha fuckers need to pay respect…We only fuck with the legends, you know how we get down and today listen I got my boy Mellow Man Ace…You know his history, you know the story…What’s good big dawg?

MM: Every fucking thing man…Moving and shaking around L.A. man duckin these crooked ass police…You know what it is we always maintaining…

S1: Alright that’s definitely what’s up…Listen bro, first of all man I just wanna go ahead and give you a thanks and shout out as a sign of appreciation for what you did for the game, the way you introduced that spanglish and the way you represented latinos back in the day…You put a lot of weight on your shoulders you know what I’m sayin…Lets take it back when you started off with your brother Sen Dog you know fuckin around with B Real, DJ Muggs you know before you got signed all four of you were just fucking around into the music shit…Give us an insight on the nucleaus on what’s about to happen back then…

MM: Well basically we all belonged to a break dance crew, we was break dancing with a crew called the L.A. B-Boys…Then I heard fucking “Sucker Mc’s” from Run-Dmc and as the moves started to get a little trickier me and Sen said fuck all this and we started an rap crew called DVX…Anyway B-Real was still breakin so I went and got him to join our crew of rappers because B-Real was always a prolific writer…Then you know I did that and nobody in the crew said shit out of the break dance crew…No one wanted to step up, I was like lets roll, lets dance…Nobody did and I brought back on Cypress Avenue,I introduced B Real to Sen and then Muggs came via another L.A. pioneer Julio G…Muggs had a bigger vision he said let’s go all the way to the top with this…So he started doing that shit with 7A3 and one thing lead to another…When Muggs stepped off to do the 7A3 thing…I kinda got booted out of the crib by my dad cause I was a lazy mutha fucker who didn’t want to work for the man…So I was forced to understand business a little bit sooner then everybody else and also understand how important it was to come out and make an impact…Anyway one of my homeboy put me up in his crib and allowed me to start shopping my little demo that I had on cassette back then…But it just so happened that Muggs landed a sound track wit 7A3 and it was for that movie Colors…He asked me if I wanted to go to the studio with him one day…I wasn’t doing shit so I was like aiiight nigga let’s go…I get there and it turned out to be Delicious Vinyl Records where he cut the record at, which was an independent record company that was just starting out…We are looking for rappers I said I can rap and I can rap in Spanish too…So then, I’m putting this all in a nutshell for you…

S1: No doubt…I’m following man, I’m listening dawg…

MM: There was a lot of labels that said no first, but it just so happened that Muggs had invited me to the studio and then Delicious Vinyl said look he got a guy by the name Tone Loc and we’re trying to fuck with this guy named Young MC but we still need some more, we still need a roster…To make a long story short I was like I’m with it…So they were feeling my little demo and they said come back tomorrow and we’ll give you a fucking contract, it was as simple as that after a lot of fucking turn downs…And I’d like to thank Delicious for stepping out for latinos…You know the first rap I laid down for them was My Pingon and that was an all Spanish rap and they was like oh shit this mutha fucker got rap in Spanish…So they bit onto it first and then later on as I was cutting the rest of the record Capital Records stepped to me after a show where I was opening up for Tee La Rock and Tone Loc at San Diego State University and that’s where Capital Records sent a representative by the name of Kenny Ortiz to come check out my show and what not…At the time it was my crew Muggs the DJ, Sen and B Real was with me and we did the show and I was in the middle at that time…Anyway Kenny Ortiz stepped to me after the show and said look man Capital Records love what your doing with this Spanish rap shit…So he said call me next week when you get back to L.A. and lets talk about a major record deal…I did that, he stepped his game up and next thing you know they buy out my contract from Delicious Vinyl and the we record Mentirosa and that was the song that basically opened it up for latinos worldwide…

S1: No doubt, no doubt…History in the making…

MM: You know what I can’t take all the credit and I’ll tell you why…Because back in 81 or 82 there was a group called The Mean Machine out of some part of New York and they had a song called Disco Dream…And on Disco Dream they had one rapper who was of Puerto Rican descent and he broke off into a small little rap in Spanish and that was the first time I had heard rap in Spanish and dem niggas inspired me and Tony G and Kid Frost La Raza to actually expand on that…But because it was such a small record that never even reached the radar screen they never got credit for being the originators of that…Those were my fore fathers and for me not to give it love and not prop it up would be me lying to myself and that’s just real talk…

S1: So listen what I wanna know and what my boyz wanna know is right now you doing the collabo with your brother Sen Dog The Reyes Brothers, I heard a lot of the tracks…But what took so long for you and your brother to come out with an album The Reyes Brothers?

MM: Real talk though mainly the fact that Sen Dog and Cypress Hills schedule was always crazy and then him trying to manage himself aside from the stage trying to have fun with his life and me going thru my up and downs you know my career hasn’t been a bed of roses and that’s because the industry left a very bad taste in my mouth because I was the first one to go through having crooked Jewish lawyers, managers getting my paper…That kind of leaves a bad taste in your mouth so what I did was just back away from it and refocus and re amp…But the Reyes Brothers thing was something that took a minute and we test tried it down on Sunset Blvd, we did like four shows on Sunset about 4 years ago and it was basically a bunch of songs that we had thrown together it was a collabo from over here a collabo from over there and we put a show together with it and kids started to come out and we was like alright now whenever we get the chance were gonna fucking really do this shit…I think the only reason that shit hasn’t sold a million records is because we didn’t dump a million dollars into it…We wanted it to be a really hood record plus it was on Sen’s record label and he wasn’t about to come out of his pockets and dump three four million into this thing…We’ll give the first album for the real heads and form a fan base, a core audience and then on the 2nd and 3rd maybe we’ll do more and go after the radio aggressively and things of that nature…But this record and those who hear it kind of bug out whoa this is really good…

S1: That’s definitely wassup, that’s definitely wassup…Now one last question…What is it that your looking to do in the future? I know that basically with this album your doing a lot of touring, your doing a lot of shows, developing a fan base, your working on Sen’s label…What is it that you as brothers and Sen with his label plan to do in the future? What can we expect from ya’ll?

MM: I can speak on me right now, because Sen is Sen and he gonna do what he gonna do…But I can tell you that I started a company called Icon Music and right now I putting a compilation together of rappers from around the world cause I felt that I haven’t been holding up the title Godfather very well so what I’m doing now is putting together a compilation together called Mellow Man Ace presents Vol.1 and I got catz from Venezuela, Toronto, Spain, Mexico, Chicago…So what I’m doing now is I’m building that record up now and one of my main goals now is looking out up in coming latino artist because they don’t have a forum and a lot labels ain’t checking for them…Another reason is that hip hop as a culture itself has a problem recognizing the latino contribution to the music…In other words when you see a BET video award show you rarely see a latino represented even though we share the same communities as African Americans do, we dwell with each other, we are very much the same, we love music, Cheverolet’s, apple pie, chicken and chicken grease, you know what I mean, we love the same things…As a culture I think hip hop needs to do a better job for that so what I’m trying to do now is create a forum where other young latinos would never get a chance to get actually heard on a worldwide level…

S1: Aiight that’s definitely wassup…That’s a hell of a way to give back…And like you said from an individual that is considered the Godfather your carrying the mantle well and your doing the right things to maintain that…Mellow Man Ace it’s been a pleasure, I got your back if anything we could ever do here for you at Legacy Magazine, open doors baby!!!

MM: Legacy Magazine that’s the only thing I’m on right now…That’s what it is!!! One love to all the fans!!!
