The Miss Issa Interview

S1 & Miss Issa

Miss Issa: Hurt No More.

"Born in San Diego and the youngest of five siblings, Issa moved to Los Angeles to try her luck in the city of opportunity. In late 2004, the Latina/Filipina beauty’s dreams were answered with an audition for the R&B group TLC's television show "R U the Girl." Issa secured a finalist position but when the contract was sent to her, she became concerned about limiting her options. She felt if she could land a position as finalist for "R U the Girl," she could probably find some other opportunities as well"(qoute from her official bio). As it turns out Miss Issa was right, since then she has dropped a single with Fat Joe and is now blazin the airways with her current single "Let Me Be The One" featuring Jim Jones. S1 caught up with Miss Issa a few weeks before her drop date and this is what she had to say:

S1: Yeah, yeah, yeah…What’s going on my peoples!! You know who this is!! This the mother fucking man S1 Legacy Magazine, Legacy Radio, Legacymag.net…And today I got a sweet, sweet little honey with us, I got Ms. Issa…What’s poppin homegirl talk to us how you feeling today baby?

Ms. Issa: I’m doing great, it’s sunny outside and I’m just doing great…

S1: Ok fantastic!! Now you are from the west coast born in San Diego correct? Just give us a little background you know, your upbringing and things of that sort….

Ms. Issa: Well I started singing at the age of 5 years old and when 16 came around I felt like I wanted to do it professionally but I didn’t know how to go about it…And a couple of years ago was my opportunity when I saw the advertisement on UPN and it was for “Are You The Girl” and so I auditioned for it…

S1: Ok, ok…Now that got your feet wet with the industry but you didn’t actually take that project and ran with it, you kind of sat back you looked at the landscape to try and figure where else you fit in because that was a nifty decision on your part…

Ms. Issa: Mama didn’t raise no fool!! I was scared honestly and it was a huge deal for me because I had never auditioned for anything like this in my entire life…And of course I was competing against girls that have been doing this their whole entire life and they had a lot of confidence some of them where over confident which is a good thing you know…When I got there my confidence level went from 100% to 0 in like 10 seconds…I practiced for like 12 hours straight singing and my voice was shot, it was crazy but you know I ended up securing a place anyway on the show, and as soon as the contract arrived I wasn’t too happy with it I didn’t agree with a lot of the things that was in the contract…So I decided that if these people think that I have talent then why not just go ahead go out on my own and that’s exactly what I did…

S1: Now you got a debut album coming up and it’s being released it’s called “Hurt No More” on Universal that’s pretty big…Talk to us about that…

Ms. Issa: I’m bringing Latin with an urban twist which is my style…I’m bringing my style to the table you know Ms. Issa and I want it to work…It better work!!!

S1: Okay, okay I got a feeling it’s going to do well…Now you are Latina and Filipina, talk to us how your background influences your music…

Ms. Issa: Yeah it has a lot to do with everything you know…I mean Latinos are making their way into the industry and doing collaborations with hip hop artists and it’s helping me make a name for myself in the in the industry…I have a lot of urban beats on my tracks and I’m hoping to pave the way for my Filipino side and I know Apple from Black Eye Peas he has some Tagalog tracks on his cd…I want to be able to do that on my next cd because this time around I really didn’t have a say on my cd…

S1: Is there anyone else that you are going to have shine on your album?

Ms. Issa: I’m happy that I got Jim Jones on the album because he’s hot right now…And he did his thing on the track “Let Me Be the One”…

S1: Any last words for the young females coming up or if you just want to address anything in particular, what’s good?

Ms. Issa: I’m just going to say that a lot of females in this industry are not taken seriously because a lot of people want to take advantage of you especially if you are a good looking person and you have talent…People will try and steer you the wrong way instead of try and help you achieve your goal…The best thing that you can do is just hire a bunch of good positive people that have the knowledge of the industry…And just keep pushing and pushing your way thru the door and don’t take no for an answer and just keep doing it, cause your gonna get a lot of no’s before you get a yes and it’ll be worth it…I wanna thank everyone from Myspace and you for taking your time for this interview…

S1: Thank you for blessing us with your presence and it doesn’t hurt to say it again “Hurt Me No More” on Bungalow/Universal records check it out and homegirl we wish you nothing but the best you look great and I’m sure the cd is going to do well and enjoy the ride okay mama!!!
