S1 & Mr Long (formerly of Black Sheep)

Mr. Long: Gotta take the Game Back

With the success that Blacksheep enjoyed in the early 90’s one would think that Blacksheep would still be able to put out hit after hit. But with the way the game has changed and a new generation of kids that has taken over hip hop its become difficult for groups like Blacksheep to stay together not to mention your classic super group break up stuff. We recently caught up with Mr. Long as he has already released his solo debut “The Class of 89” and this is what he had to say:

S1: Yeah, yeah, yeah!!! Whats going on my peoples!! You know who this is!!! This is S1 the mutha fuckin man, Legacy Magazine, Legacy Radio, Legacymag.net…And you know how we do it baby, today I got a legend here with us Mr. Long formally of Blacksheep…Whats popping big dawg? How you doin today?

Mr. L: I’m chillin fam, I’m chillin…Just trying to resurrect hip hop you know what it is…

S1: And I definitely understand where you coming from, I got a couple of years on this hip hop game and I was around for the golden era, I flavored that, you know right about the time that you were bangin it out, so I know where you coming from…But word on the streets is you gotta a little project coming up I heard its called “Class of 89”…Talk to us about that there are a lot of catz that are interested to know whats going on with you yo…

Mr. L: No doubt man, like I was sayin the “Class of 89” is much more then when I just graduated high school…It’s one of the hottest eras in hip hop music man, its back when talent really determined where you were going you know what I mean and it had nothing to do with anything but raw talent and hot music…So that’s what I’m reflecting back on in the “Class of 89”…

S1: Now were definitely going to touch on the issue that you may have with your current fellow mate and Blacksheep as a crew…But since it is a solo joint do you have anybody with you? Is anybody going to shine along with you ? What kind of heat are you holding there baby?

Mr. L: Now lets just step back for a moment like I said back in the day a solo album meant a solo album…I’m not holding anybody’s name up saying yo I’m gonna put them on there so my album will shine…I’m depending on me to do that you know what I’m sayin…

  S1: Tru, tru…

Mr. L: Most love to all the catz that’s out there doing it I’ll reach out in a minute but right now people gotta see me and my talents…

S1: Absolutely that’s definitely was sup…This brings me to my next question …Your no longer part of Blacksheep, I kind of heard…I don’t know exactly what happened so I’m just gonna go ahead and put it out there…Why don’t you explain to our readers and listeners what took place? And what brought you from being part of Blacksheep to droppin your own album here?

Mr. L: Just a long, long bad history, creative differences, a lot of BS, personal crap that goes on within groups that been together 20 plus years and pretty much in doing this project the up in coming so called Blacksheep project the beats and production that I submitted pretty much was given to my ex-partner, he kind of went through it and pretty much came up with the decision that he felt like the production that I was doing wasn’t strong enough or he in his eyes is not what we needed as Blacksheep so he wanted to reach out to other producers and you know that was his take on it…That was fine with me I could understand where he was going with that but then in order to do that you really have to look at the project as being not a Blacksheep project because if Guru from Gangstarr is doing a whole bunch of other song with different producers he’s not gonna call it a Gangstarr album…If CL Smooth is working with a bunch of different producers it’s not going to be Pete Rock and CL Smooth, see what I’m sayin and I’m not about to make people think they gonna hear us Blacksheep together, show my face on the project, put my voice on the project but it’s something that it’s not …

S1: Definitely feeling that and its definitely a valid point… Is that in your mind something that you consider the last straw or did you have your mind made up before that?

Mr. L: I was always touch and go with the situation because we as a group never had a real relationship personally…I always did my thing and he always did his thing…and the whole creative differences came when my style and his style is 2 different styles , I’m on the rugged raw club banger shit you know what I mean…He’s more laid back smoothed out R&B type of cat…So that’s where our whole creative differences lies…If I’m not doing some kind of laid back shit then he’s not feeling it so you know I do what I do…

S1: So alright enough of dwelling on the past…Again “Class of 89” Mr. Long droppin his own solo joint…Talk to us gives us some dat6es, do you have a drop date?

Mr. L: The “Class of 89” is available right now on cdbaby.com Mr. Long “Class of 89” also Mr. Long music.com…Hit me up let me know what you think and let’s keep it moving…

S1: Alright that’s definitely was sup…What else would you like to say the platform is yours…

Mr. L: Well it’s been about 12 years of commercial success in rap music…Please…Lets get back to hip hop…Dudes need to come with a lot more then what they coming with and I’m pretty sure you’ve heard it time and time again everybody’s tired of what they see and what they hear so its time to step off of it and step the game up you know…All up in coming artists man, its more then just making a dollar its about making a difference man change the game…
