Hailing from the mean streets of Northeast Indiana which has now become the official murder capital of the United States come the Grind Family. The Grind Family is a movement in that part of the country and they have been the number one unsigned hype for years now, appearing on the cover of Murder Dogg magazine and getting shine in The Source and Vibe magazine. We recently caught up with the Mr. C.O.B. and the boyz from the Grind and they put us on to what it means to Grind!
S1: Yeah Baby…Was’ goin on, was’ goin on. This is Legacy Radio S1 back at you- Today boy I’m telling you we’ve been trying to chase these cats for a minute but we finally caught them I got the Grind Family all three of them in the house at the same time. What’s goin on boys how you feelin man?
Grind Fam: We good man, we doin good..
S-!: Alright everything’s alright you feelin happy man?
Grind Fam: Yeah, yeah we feelin alright, you know I mean we ain’t too happy you know…it goes back and forth.
S-1: Mr COB why don’t you go ahead and just break down everybody in you crew and let us know how you came up with the name The Grind Family man
COB: You know on the block man, I used to watch a lot of gangsta movies, you know it was like the Gambino Family so what Gangster was like on some money type/hustling type of stuff so I just said the Grind Family instead of the Gambino Family. Thas how we came up with the name.
S-1: And again tell us who is in the grind family, who does it consist of, who are the top dawgs yo?
COB: Me myself COB, my guy Soup, My guy Phil Mo, My guy Will Scrilla he locked up right now, but you know it’s all good
S-1: I’m sure you guys keeping up form doin what you gotta do to keep him strong and shit
COB: Yeah no doubt man.
S-1: Alright, alright….I know you guys kinda been under the radar but you definitely startin to get some shine. I know you graced a couple of magazines, why don‘t we go ahead and talk about that for a minute. I know you been fuckin around with XXL -what else, what other magazines and how have you guys been able to get your music out there. What’s goin on with y’all.
Phil Mo: We did the VIBE magazine, The Source, things like that. Put out some mix tapes, stuff like that. We had the cover of the Murda Dog magazine too out of California, they graced us with the cover of that one you know what I’m sayin.
COB Some down south and crunk magazines, XXL, we were on The Source twice you know what I‘m sayin.
S-1: So you may be under the radar, but your definitely getting the bubble. To be honest with you man Me and Migs are like two peas in a pod, you know what I’m sayin, and when he telling me yo this is hott I know something is goin on man and yo the grind family the music I’ve been hearing from you guys is nothing but spectacular music. I definitely wanna bring the conversation to the single that we’re rockin on our radio show Happy Better Days. Talk to us about that single man, how did that come about, what was the inspiration and How did you come up with that yo?
Phil Mo: Well you know everybody wanna be happy you know what I’m sayin. No matter who you is, everybody want to be happy. So we kinda made a hopeful song sayin you can make it. We all unhappy in a way, but we all tryin to be happy. This song reflects on people that are tryin to make it you know.
S-1: You guys haven’t signed to a major label yet but I know you’ve been approached, I know you guys have been in discussions with record labels. Right now your with No Guts No Glory Records right, but what’s your status. What’s goin on, talk to us how can we help you out in this situation here was up.
COB: Really man, we’re just lackin producers you know what I’m sayin. But we got some heat, like your hearin already. Pretty much it’s only a hand full of people out here that are really serious about this music and we one of them. There’s just not that many, maybe there’s one…two..maybe three of them. We just ain’t in the location to get the tracks that all these top notch rappers and artists are getting, you know what I’m sayin. If we was in that situation, man it would’ve been on already. But we doin our thing we just need network and plugg with more producers man, more hotter producers. Coz we got the hot lyrics to rape anybody’s beats you know what I mean.
S-1: As far your lyrics are concerned, do you guys draw from your real life experiences, or some of you guys are poets, you know what gives you the inspiration for your lyrics what draws you to talk about particular topics man
Soup: Certain things I am feelin, certain things that I went through, I put it down, I need a good beat. Some things that I put from my head I don’t have beats, just stuff that I go through, and I feel like a poet. I write it as a poem, it comes out so smooth and people don’t understand where I am coming from.
S-1: Not exactly who, but what influences you? Is it an Era a person a music style, what influences you to create?
COB: Life as COB man, just what I see everyday, I get tired of looking at it, that influenced me-the ghetto influenced me to make a better life for myself . Everything I see man, everything we done been through, I got shot in the head, my man Phil Mo, it ain’t nuttin to brag about, be he done put somebody in the dirt but he got off on self defense. All this then being locked up, just life experiences you know what I mean, not glorified, you know just what we go through, we try to tell people that that ain’t the right thing to do. Every time we spit it’s just heart felt music, a lot of deep feelings to it
S-1: No doubt no doubt you gotta turn the negative into the positive, you gotta teach the young bucks. I’m glad you brought this up, we’ve interviewed a lot of catz and I asked this question to one cat that was involved in some gun play and shit like that. What do you guys think of artists that may not necessarily literally live the life that they been spittin on wax, what we call studio gangstas. Whats your take on that whole situation with that phenomenom?
COB: It’s like this, this is just my opinion and I’m gonna let them express theirs, a nigga gonna bring it to them sooner or later, so if your not used to getting popped at, if you ain’t used to that then hey, your time will come and you gonna shit on your motherfuckin self that’s all that is
S-1: Eventually someone is gonna pull your punk card
Phil Mo: I feel they just don’t know no better, they just goin with flow, whatever somebody doin they doin
COB: Yeah coz any person that lived that life man don’t wanna live that life, if you out there talkin about woopty woo and this and that I don’t really think you been through it coz if you been shot, been in the car with dead people, seein dead people in the streets, you don’t really want to see that and go throught that and glorify that. You gonna speak on it, but you don’t want to glorify it like it’s the thing to do.
S-1: One more thing that I wanted you niggas to touch on, there’s another member of the grind family that right now isn’t currently with you guys, he hands out the stuff like that, is there anything you’d like to say to him or anything you would like to speak about in relationships to him give him a lil bit of shine considering he isn’t here for this interview
COB: Yeah thas the man, thas the Midwest underground King
Soup: Will Scrill
COB: He the one who really jumped it all off so you know I’d just tell him keep his head up you know we waiting
Soup: Be strong dawg
COB: I got him tatted on me
Phil Mo: so it’s all good. It’s all real
COB: Yeah we be there when we get right, we’ll be there to help him to get right.
S-1: No doubt no doubt after you nigga s popped off he popped off as well even though he ain’t with you right now.
S-1: Last but not least boys, I know www.grindfamily.com but um, I want cats to hear it from y’all niggas, where do they need to go to check out the music, where can they go see where your at, where can they feel your shit dawg
COB: They can go to any stores anywhere almost in the mid west, our cd’s are in like almost all the stores in the mid west, a couple of Atlanta stores, and of course they can go to grind family.com.
S-1: Any last words yall niggas wanna give a shot out to, anybody in particular, any last words you want to give to the listeners and shit
COB: This the Grind-COB we hollering at all the hot producers man, S1 I’ll tell you how it is, we spit hot joints so come at us and get at us with the hot joints that y’all producing and lets make history man
S-1: No Doubt
