The Interview
Prodigy has been putting in work since like 92 with Mobb Deep, releasing classic joints like The Infamous, Hell on Earth and Murder Musik. Prodigy realeased his first solo album in 2000 titled HNIC with the help of Alchemist and other producers besides Havoc. He proved that he could do the solo artist thing while maintaining his relationship with Mobb Deep, even garnering critical acclaim from critics and fans alike. With tales of street life and his raspy grimy signature flow P has set the bar high for lyricists for years. Prodigy has had his share of famous beefs from 2 Pac to Jay-Z. With HNIC Part II getting set to drop in March and P’s 3 year bid about to start, the Legacy crew got a chance to politk with P a little something and this is what he had to say:
S1: Yeah, yeah, yeah….What’s going on my peoples? You know who this is, this is the man S1 Legacy Magazine, Legacy Radio, legacymag.net…And check man today I got some real talk for ya’ll niggas, you know what I’m saying…I know I like to bring a lot of extravagant interviews to you and whatnot but today I got my Prodigy you know what I’m saying…He’s getting ready to take care of some business…What’s good big dawg? Talk to us man…
P: What up homie…What up…I’m over here chillin, know what I mean, over here in the studio in Brooklyn…Just chillin man…
S1: Aiight that’s wassup…I’m just gonna go ahead and throw it out there, I’m sure half of the world already knows, you are going to be doing a little bit of time…They are talkin about a 3 year bid…How are your emotions? And how are your feelings right now? Where are you mentally?, I know you put in a lot of work trying to put out a lot of music before you bounce…Where you at dawg? Talk to us…
P: Yeah basically I had to cop out to a 3 1/2, you know what I mean, cause I got caught with a gun in my car…I was facing up to 15 years if I would have blew trial…The way the trial was going it definitely wasn’t a good look for me, so I decided to cop out to a 3 ½ then risk eating all that time because I got a lot of work to do with my music and my career, you know what I mean, I got kids…So Iwasn’t trying to do all that time, I could do a little 3 years, come home and bounce right back, you know what I mean, it’s nothing…Basically that’s what’s going on right now…On the upside I got HNIC II dropping , you know what I mean, definitely wrap that up...It’s crazy…That’ll be my voice while I’m gone my album speaking for me basically because you know I had to make it tight for it to speak for me, you know what I’m saying…
S1: Absolutely…Yeah, yeah, you got to put a good face out there while your locked up…
P: Yeah exactly, so you know that’s what I got going on right now and right now I’m dealing with this company called Voxsonic who own a patent on technology that they could take my song and they can translate it into any language in the world, you know what I mean…It sounds like me rapping in Russian, German or Spanish or whatever it’s crazy!!!
S1: Yo I heard about that…I did a little research and I heard that you did get together with that company and they state that they are going to translate your music to 100 different languages, you know what I sayin…That’s a hell of a way to put out an album, you definitely going to touch a lot of people, your fan base it pretty much worldwide and their definitely going to have a chance to listen to it in their lauguage…I believe that this is the first album being dropped in this format…Is that right?
P: Yeah I definitely I felt that it’s groundbreaking, definitely something new…It sounded real interesting when I heard it myself, I heard a sample of it and I was like wow!!! It’s mind blowin to hear it and I was standing there like how did you do that it’s impossible…It’s gonna be a good look, it’s gonna be a good thing…
S1: Aiight that’s definitely wassup…Now as far as the material that your recording, so that while your away, you still have like pertinent and relevant material on the regular…Is it going to be retrospective? Is it gonna revolve around what your going through now? Basically how is everything gonna pop off, niggas wanna know!!!
P: No doubt…Basically I made the album expressing myself like I always do…The good thing about this album is that I made it along the lines of the 1st album…I’m definitely coming out with some more information on this album just really just like fuck it just put it out there, you know what I’m sayin, cause I feel like it’s just time to do that…That’s where I’m at…That’s the point where I’m at in my life…I got a lot of songs on there that’s going to open up a lot of conversations…I’ve been doing that since like 96, putting information in my rhymes, you know political games and views on the world…Just different things, know what I mean…That’s basically the real difference you gonna hear right now…
S1: Yo, now that your on that topic I read somewhere that you are having a positive look, that you were gonna do your time like a man and that it was gonna make you stronger…What’s good with that dawg?
P: You know basically…You know I read the Malcom X book back in the day… My moms gave it to me when I was like 16 for my birthday, you know what I mean…he had an interesting book an interesting life and I feel like what he went through it kind of reminds me of what I’m going thru now…The only difference is I already really know what time it is before I’m going to jail…He learned about himself and who he is after he got locked up…When I’m getting locked up right now it’s really forcing me to snap into condition of where I’m supposed to be doing with myself really…Cut out all the bullshit, cut out all the smoking, drinking, get my physical condition in order, you know what I’m saying, get strong and really focus on the future and what I got going on right now…I’ve been struggling for a minute with really getting my act together and it’s been hard, it’s been hard to stop smoking and stop livin a certain lifestyle…
S1: How is the family support going? I mean obviously Havoc has got your back, I know Alchemist has got your back but at the end of the day their gonna be missing a part of their family…Just give us a little outlook on how the rest of the family may be affected by your particular situation…You feel me?
P: I mean everybody’s taking it like, its reality, we all got to deal with it and stay strong and just got to deal na meen…
S1: What are some of the things that you are thinking of doing after you come out?
P: I mean everything that’s going on with the album and my work has already been going on…This case is really not making me do something except getting my mind and my body in order…HNIC part II was already going down so it ain’t like I’m on that Malcom X tip because I caught a case, I’ve been saying everything that I’ve been saying…I just want to clear that up…Anyway I also got an autobiography that I’m working on for like the past 3 years and it’s about my life and goes thru my generation like my whole family tree and our story and then it goes into my life and Mobb Deep and what we’ve been thru…I’ll be finishing that up while I’m inside and I got things to play out when I get home na meen…
S1: Aiight that’s definitely wassup…I got my boy P from Mobb Deep for all of those chiming in…Any words of advice for catz out there because you catz have been in this game for a minute with different labels and stuff, now you working with 50…I mean ya’ll have been putting in work for years son…
P: No doubt, no doubt…I mean yo man…My advice is just be like, yo whatever you do in life man, music or whatever it is just be serious about it…Practice your craft everyday because it takes years of hard, hard work na meen and just paying attention to what you doing and focusing on your goals, you know what I’m sayin…You’ll be a success at it…Basically that’s what it is, now what I’m sayin…
