Kool DJ Red Alert: The Propmaster
Since the days of Afrika Bambatta Kool DJ Red Alert has been giving and getting props hence the nickname The Propmaster…He has been influential in bringing forth some of the greatest hip hop artists to the radio and America’s mainstream. The most famous redhead in hip hop has been keeping busy by doing two radio shows as well as traveling the globe spreading the love of hip hop. S1 caught up with Red Alert recently and got the lowdown and here is what he had to say:
S1: Yeah, yeah, yeah!!! Whats going on my peoples?!!! You know who this is! This is S1 the muthafucking man!!! Legacy Magazine, Legacy Radio, Legacymag.net…Listen man you know we always fuck with the legends you know we only bring the best people on the radio show and our magazine and today I got a serious, serious legend I got my man Kool DJ Red Alert…How you feeling today baby?
RA: Man what can I say I’m just glad to here still doing what I’m doing I’m not going nowhere soon…So whats the deal playa?
S1: Chillin…Kool DJ Red Alert I been listening to you getting down for a long time, I don’t even know where to begin there so much material…Lets take it back for minute…I remember listening to your radio show back in the late 80’s on 98.7 Kiss and you literally the only DJ with a hip hop show…You brought us catz like Public Enemy, Krs-One, Eric B and Rakim…Talk to us about that, it was a very pivitol point in hip hop…
RA: I started doing Kiss is October of 83’ bout 23 years ago, that’s real talk…And 23 years later I’m still doing radio now on Power 105 I do the old school at noon…But lets go back to like the beginning stage when I was able to go ahead and introduce a lot of records from that era in 83’ like Run Dmc and the Fat Boys and Whoudini and then the next era like the people you just mention Eric B and Rakim, Salt and Peppa, Heavy D, Public Enemy, BDP you know I mean I saw about 4 different genre’s everytime you kept on seeing a different segment of people right behind another…
S1: Your currently on Power 105 and I understand you also got a radio show on Serius Satellite?
RA: Like I said I do the old school at noon Power 105 up in New York City and I’m involved in Serius Satellite radio…I run a little left because I’m like open minded to all different types of music I deal with this channel called Boom Box where you be hearing me play not only school hip hop but some alternative stuff, I even be rocking some mash ups…You know why? Because I get down like that I don’t keep myself narrowed minded so I’m open minded to a little bit of everything…
S1: Okay that’s wassup…
RA: Besides that I’m still traveling all across country if not all around the world DJ’n, you know pleasing everybody…
S1: You were voted into the 50 most influential people of hip hop list by Rolling Stone Magazine, you were also inducted to the Rock-n-Roll Hall of fame, so as far as music is concerned whether its hip hop or not you getting recognized by the masses…Now how does that feel?

RA: Man I’m gonna tell you straight up and down, its an honor to be acknowledged from all different type of people and all different walks of life…Man it’s a pleasure you don’t know how good it feels that people acknowledge you all different nationalities and cultures…
S1: Let’s bring back to the days of Wildstyle(The 1st Hip Hop Movie)…Some catz might not know what the fuck I’m talking about…How did you get put on? Reflect on that for a minute…
RA: Well I started out by just watching DJ’s do they thing…So I started going to the disco, you that’s old school when you say going to the disco, but then on Saturday’s I used to go to a Kool Herc party and checked them out so that opened my eyes to go ahead and get involved and my cousin you Jazzy Jay saw what I was doing and I showed him the basics and he went and got his turntables before you know it he moved up in the Bronx and Afrika Bambatta took notice of him and picked him up and Jazzy Jay spoke up for me and before you know it both of us was playing for Bam…
S1: That’s definitely wassup…Public Enemy you gave them a lot of air play when nobody would touch them with a ten foot pole…I remember you playing Welcome to the Terrodome and Rebel Without a Pause for like 45 minutes straight…Break that down for us dawg how you broke a lot of catz…
RA: Well I’m gonna put it like this if there is something I believe in that I share that I take acknowledgment of and I feel it I go on it and I didn’t care what names it was…Yo I don’t care if it’s a nobody if you sound good bottomline you getting play…I don’t play politics I don’t play favorites, I play records I believe in…That’s why I went after records like Public Enemy songs in the beginning…So if it sounds good I’m bangin it…
S1: So real quick as far as your history is concerned , what do you think would be the staple 20 years from now? You know what do you think your mark is going to leave as far as music is concerned and hip hop?
RA: Well the way I want people to recognize me as a person that brought you the sounds, brought you the vibe, brought you the attention, brought you a little bit of everything together…If I had a lot of people who I was looking up to before me and I see them to this day where it’s an honor that’s how I want people to look at me down the road…
S1: Yo man how did you get that dope ass name? How did you cop that name?
RA: My man Dennis…I used to be hanging out on the Grand Concourse in the BX chillin with my red fro and my man Dennis used to see me coming up the block and he used to be like Red alert, red alert and just stuck on me and everybody used to like my vibe and be like he cool, he cool so I just put them together and became Kool DJ Red Alert…
S1: What can we expect from you the propmaster, the bum…What you got in the oven?

RA: Yo put it this way fish is in the oven and its just being baked right now and I can’t tell you until its done…STFM stay tuned for more!!!
