Subsatnce Abuse Bringing Back That Real Hip Hop

Subsatnce Abuse: Bringing Back That Real Hip Hop
Hailing from the west coast, L.A. to be exact, Substance Abuse is a hip hop group that brings back memories of raps golden era of hip hop in the 90’s with there brand of hip hop. With a name like Substance Abuse you would think that we’d be interviewing a couple of stoned out burners but that was further from the truth because these are some of the most intelligent, articulate catz that we have had on in awhile…S1 recently was able to get into the minds of Substance Abuse’s Eso and Subz…:
S1: Yeah, yeah, yeah…What’s going on my peoples!!! You know who this is, this is S1 the mother fucking man!! Legacy Magazine, Legacy Radio, Legacymag.net…And check it man today I’m going to take a trip on the Westside, I’m going to dip in L.A. for a little bit and I got Eso with me from Substance Abuse what’s good baby?
Eso: Chilling man I’m out here in Cali man what’s good…
S1: Chilling, chilling man just trying to catch up to all the movers and shakers in hip hop, you know what I’m saying…I seen you name pop up on the radar, you know what I’m saying…Talk to us dawg what’s going on with you and your crew?
Eso: Well we working on this new album right now called “Background Music”, we just did a song with MC Eiht from Compton’s Most Wanted and we got some other surprises on there I don’t want to let the cat out the bag, you know what I’m saying…But just trying to do this hip hop thing and do the music that we believe in…
S1: So there’s definitely two members in the group we got Eso and Subz, now you guys have been at it for a minute, you been fucking around since the mid 90’s catching a little bit of wind, just take us thru that and what you are bringing to the game you feel me?
Eso: Basically we just a couple of catz that got an old school mentality about this hip hop thing, we’ve been friends since elementary school and we really started doing this hip hop thing, we started freestylin and going to these shows back in the early 90’s and kind of just evolved into doing songs, you know what I’m saying, we put out a little underground tape back in 98 and basically a lot of our music reminds people of that era and wasn’t really a conscious effort it was just the time that influenced us and shaped our attitude about hip hop and it kind of reflected in our music but we never made a conscious attempt, I just think we got an old school mentality about it…

S1: Definitely a golden era feel that goes without sayin!
Eso: Yeah that’s the thing that most people say about us, you know what I’m sayin and I really take that as a compliment and again that’s the era that shaped our attitude about things…
S1: Alright that’s definitely wassup…Do you feel that you have a good fit today with the music that your producing as opposed to the music that everybody else is producing in L.A.?
Eso: Well basically the way I kind of look at it like in the late 90’s the underground or indie hip hop scene kind of split up into 2 factions because you had catz that was on that way in left field kind of stuff and then you got the catz that were doing the keep it real kind of hip hop it was almost a like a reaction against the other stuff, and where me and Subz was coming from was that the spirit of hip hop was lost in those 2 extremes and to us you had to have heart but you also had to have prevelance and that’s kind of what I feel we bring to the game and I think now people are starting to catch on now that this album’s been out for a minute…You know when we first put it out we didn’t know how people were going to react because it took so long to put together and we were dealing with a lot of hurdles putting it out and it was really a bad time to be a debut artist in 2006 even though catz had heard of us this was the 1st time we put out a full length release…I think that people appreciate the fact that we’re just doing hip hop we never thought of it as being underground and that’s how we looked at it…

S1: Alright that’s definitely a good point of view that you got there…Substance Abuse the name of the group break that down for us…
Eso: Yeah that’s a question we get a lot but basically abuse is a word that correlates to excess and what we like to think we put substance into the music that we present another way of looking at it is we take abuse for having substance given the state of affairs in the music industry right now, you could probably attest to that, there’s a lot of non sense going on out there when you try to put out something real…It definitely deeper then getting faded and stuff like that…
S1: Alright last but not least any words of advice for catz following in your footsteps?

Eso: I mean the basic thing that I would like to see going on right now in the music industry is just people taking the music more seriously and if you really have it in your heart to do it then do it…Just recognize to do something good is not easy, you cant just put something together and just throw it out there and just be like classic material you gotta really put your heart into it and don’t worry about what’s going to happen to it commercially…I just don’t see catz giving it their all and we need classic material out there and I just don’t see that but that’s what I would like to see…
S1: So where could we hear your music? Give us the math so we can go and check you catz out…
Eso: The easiest place to check us out would be Myspace.com/substanceabuse and we got all the links where you can check us at…We got interviews, videos etc… So come check us out…I want to extend my thanks to you catz for hitting us up for an interview…
S1: Alright that’s definitely wassup it’s been my pleasure interviewing you because it’s catz like you that make the hip hop world go round no bullshit!!!
