Verbal Threat is about to bring back the golden era of hip hop back with arguably the man how set off the golden era: Premo! With one cat from the west coast and the other cat from the east coast they have created their own sound that is sure to capture the hip hop world by storm. S1 recently caught up with Kool Sphere from Verbal Threat and this is what he had to say:
S1: Yeah, yeah, yeah!!! What’s going on my peoples!! You know who this is, this is S1 the muthafuckin man, Legacy Radio, Legacy Magazine, Legacymag.net…And today ya’ll I got my dude Kool Sphere, that’s half of Verbal Threat you know what I’m saying…What’s poppin baby? How you feeling today big dawg?
KS: Man everything’s love, everything’s love man…Just working on new shit and everything’s chillin man…
S1: Alright, alright…Before anything I definitely wanna throw out his man Reppond couldn’t make it he is still in the studio touching some things up taking care of business…But my man did keep his promise and he did come thru…So what’s going on with you today?
KS: Just trying to bang this album out its been in the works for a good year or so got a lot of catz that make special appearances on the production tip and all that…You know just making moves…
S1: Alright just to let everybody know what the name of the album? When is it going to drop? And who you got with you? Who’s holding heat with you?
KS: Word up…The album is going to be called the Golden Era cause that’s basically the era that we’re reppin that 88-92 shit but we flippin it with a 2007 style cause everybody’s so caught up in doing this new shit on the radio with all that nonsense…So we’re trying to come thru like the back door like 30 kids in a roll up type style hitting you over the head with some of the old shit…We hit you with Premier, Kool G Rap, Mr. Walt and my man Evil Dee from the Beatminerz flipped 2 tracks that we are flippin…We got Babu from Dilated he did a joint that we working on…We got some Wu-Tang catz 4th Disciple and my man Mathematics to a joint…We got a whole fucking sick roster man we just trying to put it all together and smack muthafukers in the face with it!!!
S1: Damn man it sounds like its going to be some heavy ass shit man…You touched on “Reality Check” is that going to be your 1st single?
KS: Yeah we dropped that with Fat Beats we had Premier on that and Kool G Rap on the B-side…
S1: Aiight that’s wassup…You gonna be shooting that video pretty soon right?
KS: Nah we just shot it like 3 weeks ago and right now we out in Cali handling some business…It’s gonna be ill we gonna drop within the next 2 weeks or so…
S1: You just ran down a list of whose who in hip hop a lot of catz maybe sitting there sayin how did these catz get in the game? How are they credible? What did they put down before hand that all this attention?
KS: I hear you money it’s a tough game there’s a lot of frauds out there…Straight up and down I feel you on that man…We almost feel like we are outsiders that everytime we play our joints people are just like yo! What type of music is this? This is like real shit…How come your shit ain’t on the radio 24/7? I’m like yo man the game is saturated with bullshit for a long time…I came up as a graffiti writer out of Queens from like 1985 and just coming up having an appreciation for the game…One just as a writer you know any throw up kid or a kid who just wrote his tag up on the wall, I wanted to take it to the next level so I was fortunate enough to get mentored by some catz my boy Sketch from craftwork kings out of Brooklyn…So the foundation for me initially as a graffiti writer breaker but having that deep love I didn’t want to put out bullshit that everybody did so I would try and step it up rocking dope pieces and characters so I literally took that love and going to the next level I applied that to the music on my end, whereas like we can come in we can do the basic rhyming and all this other bullshit, but we was like nah man the shit that gets me inspired is the complex shit that makes you think flip some dope lyrics and shit and so that’s literally what we’re bringing that old school love for the graf game I transported that into like the hip hop shit so now I gotta bring that raw fuckin forgotten style of emcee’in back into the game…
S1: Aiight that’s definitely wassup…Now the golden era, I’m stuck on that name you know what I’m saying, I got a couple of years on these young bucks I experienced the golden era, it was a beautiful thing you know what I’m saying…The phrase does get thrown around because it was a beautiful time you know what I’m saying…Now what makes you think that your actually gonna be able to reopen those doors and bring catz back to that beautiful time?
KS: Yeah like with us everybody has a different interpretation of what the golden era is…With me and my mans experience with us it was just on the music level we pretty much thought from like 88-92 was the timeframe that impacted us strong and that’s when Road to the Riches Kool G and Big Daddy Kane Long Live the Kane…Brand Nubians All For One you know what I’m sayin like going all the way up to 84-94 that was the era that meant so much to us and when I met Reppond long story short was in school, literally he walked past me rappin an old Brand Nubian verse and literally as he was rappin it I finished it before he stopped, he turned around and was like how’d you on Nubs? Cause nobody was up on Nubians back then and it was just like that love…So basically like that’s our style man…
S1: Once again for all those that are catching on late this S1 from Legacy Magazine I got my dude Kool Sphere from Verbal Threat representin, dudes are ready to drop their joint…When can we expect the album to drop? Is there a date set or are you still feeling that out?
KS: Yeah, yeah we’re still feeling it out man we were originally trying to get it out by December but we’ve been getting a lot of love overseas as well…We didn’t kind of expect that out the gate…We want to make sure that this is marketed and promoted right, I would say if it was up to me January or February…
S1: Any websites catz can check you out at? Any Myspace? Where can we peep yo shit out my dude?
KS: No doubt homebase is always going to be Verbalthreat.com that’s just where everything’s at…On the Myspace joint we are always updating and throwing up little joints and little snippets of the album…
S1: S1, Legacy Magazine, Kool Sphere….Yo the name of the single is “Reality Check” produced by Premier and the name of the album is called “The Golden Era” don’t forget it!! Aiight my homie be easy, be safe my dude!!!
